Global Payment API
Africa & China
Chinese tourists are among the most important to the travel industry. They not only arrive in large numbers, but also spend huge amounts wherever they go. However, although more and more Chinese are coming to Africa, they are unable - rather than unwilling - to spend money locally. This is because Chinese credit cards cannot be used in Africa yet, and conversion limits and safety reasons make cash the only option.
Two Lakes was asked by banks in Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and South Africa to provide technical solution that would allow Chinese tourists to make mobile payments locally through Alipay, WeChat Pay, or similar platforms. Our team first mapped out the local mobile payment market. Then we brought in Citcon, a global payment aggregator, to link up with the banks directly.
It is hoped that this partnership can help the tourism and hospitality sectors of Zimbabwe and Tanzania recover quickly after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides.
